Moodle Book Opens Doors and Generates Targets

My Moodle book about teaching History has opened a couple of doors and generated some interesting targets. Within days of the book's publication I received one of those emails that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. It began " I came across your name by accident on the internet in Amazon.com while shopping for books and I checked up on ......" The author continued "I am Rodrigo and I was a student of yours back in the year 1992 in King's College school of Madrid. You Read more

Moodle and Clipbank: Seamless Integration

Channel 4's Clipbank has proved to be an invaluable tool in the drive to increase our use of the school's VLE by pupils and teachers. A subscription to Clipbank offers teachers a wide range of subjects and each clip is a maximum of two or three minutes long. The content and context of the clip are indicated by short pieces of text - useful labels for teachers who want to embed them into a Moodle course and useful signposts for students who need a headsup on what they are about to view. The embedding Read more

Moodle Assists the Culture Club

Our Head of Geography gave a two minute 'shout out' at assembly inviting students to the department's new lunchtime gathering, to be known as the Culture Club. Her intention is for an informal gathering of enthusiasts to discuss hot 'Geography in the news' issues, share experiences and learn more about the world in which we live. As I tend to do whilst listening to committed professional teachers enthusing about their subject,  I began to picture how Moodle could be of assistance to the Culture Read more

Teaching And Learning: Kindles In The Classroom

My Kindle is not just for holidays. It is an important everyday tool. I download the morning papers for free onto it every morning with Calibre software and have more magazines to read on it than you would find at a WH Smith's distribution centre. I send text documents to it by email and read them whilst travelling. I download sample chapters from Penguin's site before deciding if I want to buy. The Kindle is perfect for those of us who think a tablet is a bit of overkill when you want to be able Read more

Web 2.0 Wonders: Epen Changed My Life!

I love marking GCSE History scripts. I have done it for several years now and find that no matter how busy I am at the end of a term, I can always fit in the 350 scripts I usually mark. In recent years I have become disillusioned with the paper based manual marking. The assessor has to go through the script and add up the marks, employ a checker to verify the arithmetic and process the results. The administration can take several hours and whilst I love reading candidates answers, I Read more

Teaching and Learning: Great Leaders!

"Great mangers get people to believe in them. Great leaders get people to believe in themselves."  It is appropriate that my first post should mark the retirement of Mr James Keogh, Liverpool's longest serving (by a country mile!) inner-city headteacher and a close friend. In terms of childrens' teaching and learning he is one of life's naturals and I was fortunate to begin my teaching career under his guidance. I began teaching at St Anne's RC Junior School, Liverpool 7  in September 1987. Read more
